Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2002 with the undergraduate Honours Course during the tenure of Prof. Gopa Dutta Bhowmik, Principal, Lady Brabourne College. Dr. Aditi Nag Chaudhuri was the founder head of this department under whose able guidance the department flourished to its full grandeur.

The inaugural programme of the department was held under the sponsorship of UGC on 'Impact of Research on Microbial World on the Economy of the Developing Countries'. Prof. Satyasadhan Chakraborty, the then Minister in Charge, Higher Education, inaugurated the department.

The Postgraduate Course in Microbiology was introduced in 2005 with 15 students and eventually the seat capacity was increased to 25 in 2017. Prof. Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, then Pro Vice Chancellor (Academics), University of Calcutta, was invited to deliver the inaugural speech of the first orientation programme for the Post Graduate.students. A One Year Post Graduate Diploma Course in 'Food & Drug Safety' was further introduced by the department, which was approved by the University of Calcutta and sponsored by University Grants Commission in 2011 with 10 students.

The department has flourished with great accolade and grandeur acquiring many sophisticated instruments and equipments by obtaining grants from DST- FIST and CPE in 2010 and DBT STAR in 2012 and 2018. The Post graduate Department has also received grant from West Bengal DBT BOOST II, under Department of Higher Education, Science & Technology & Biotechnology, Govt. of West Bengal (2015), followed by DST -FIST(2nd time, 2019), CPE phase II (2016) and DBT- Builder (2021) in recent years. We take pride in the consistent academic and professional progression of our students. Each year, a significant number of students pursue higher education in prestigious institutions across India (IISC, Bangalore, TIFR Mumbai, Hyderabad, NBRC, IISER, JNCASR, IITs etc.) and abroad (John Hopkins University, USA; UC San Diego Institute, USA; Imperial College, UK; University of Cambridge, England; University of Tennessee, Knoxville and many more). Many students have successfully cleared competitive examinations like GATE, NET, BET, TIFR, GAT B, CUET, JAM, COGJET, IBAB etc., while others have entered research, teaching and industry roles.

To support student growth, the department regularly organises seminars, guest lectures, alumni lecture series, industrial visits and workshops.

Our faculty members are actively engaged in diverse research areas, contributing to national and international publications and interdisciplinary projects. A number of research scholars under the able guidance of the faculty members have successfully completed their doctoral degree.
